About Chandigarh
Chandigarh is India’s first planned city and the shared capital of Punjab and Haryana. The central government administers it directly as a Union Territory. Le Corbusier designed its master plan in 1951 as a grid of self-contained sectors. Each sector measures roughly 800 by 1,200 metres and works as its own neighbourhood, with a market, schools, and green space within walking distance.
Chandigarh anchors the wider Tricity region alongside Mohali in Punjab and Panchkula in Haryana. The Capitol Complex in Sector 1 became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016, and it draws architecture enthusiasts from around the world. Most visitors also stop at the Rock Garden, Sukhna Lake, and the Rose Garden. Chandigarh consistently ranks among India’s cleanest and greenest cities.
This site focuses on practical Chandigarh information, not generic content. Every tool and guide here answers a real local need — check a sector’s pin code, pay a traffic challan, plan a trip to Shimla, or track today’s air quality, all from this one page.

Straight answers to questions people often search alongside “Chandigarh.”
Is Chandigarh a state or a Union Territory?
Chandigarh is a Union Territory, administered directly by the central government. It also serves as the capital of two states at once, Punjab and Haryana, which makes it unique in India.
Who designed Chandigarh?
Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier designed the master plan in 1951, building on an earlier layout by Albert Mayer. Pierre Jeanneret, Maxwell Fry, and Jane Drew designed much of the city’s housing and public buildings.
Why is there no Sector 13 in Chandigarh?
Le Corbusier left the number 13 out of the original 1951 plan due to a common superstition, so the grid skipped straight from Sector 12 to Sector 14 for over 50 years. The UT Administration fixed this in February 2020, officially renaming Mani Majra as Sector 13.
Is Chandigarh in Punjab or Haryana?
Neither. Chandigarh belongs to no state, but it borders both and serves as the capital of each. Mohali in Punjab and Panchkula in Haryana sit right beside it, forming the Tricity.
What is Chandigarh known for?
Chandigarh is known for its planned sector grid, the UNESCO-listed Capitol Complex, the Rock Garden, and Sukhna Lake. It regularly ranks among India’s most liveable and greenest cities.
Is Chandigarh a city in Punjab?
No. Chandigarh is a separate Union Territory, not part of Punjab. It only serves as the shared capital for both Punjab and Haryana.
Is Chandigarh an expensive city to live in?
Chandigarh ranks among India’s pricier mid-sized cities, mainly for rent and property. Day-to-day costs like food and transport stay closer to average for North India.
Why is Chandigarh so famous?
Chandigarh is famous as India’s first fully planned city, designed by Le Corbusier, and for the UNESCO-listed Capitol Complex, the Rock Garden, and its clean, green sector layout.
